Why it exists

A small thing the office does

The community truck started as a practical idea — neighbors moving, donations stuck in someone's living room, U-Haul reservations being unreasonably difficult. So Steve put a truck on the property and made the keys available.

Years later, it's quietly become one of the things people remember about Bear Valley. Locals know to call. Non-profits — Big Brothers Big Sisters, ECOSLO, smaller groups too — have used it for everything from delivering office furniture to clearing out donation backlogs on short notice.

There's no rental fee, no paperwork tied to a real estate transaction, no expectation. The only ask is that if you use it for an actual move, a small contribution back toward maintenance keeps it road-ready for whoever needs it next.

What you get

The truck, plus the gear you'd otherwise rent

Not just the truck. It's outfitted with the basics that turn a move from a long day into a manageable afternoon.

01

The Truck

A U-Haul-style box truck that runs reliably and is maintained for community use, not commercial wear.

02

Furniture Dolly

Standard appliance dolly for the heavy items — refrigerators, washers, dressers.

03

Tie-Down Straps

Ratchet straps to secure the load so nothing slides on Los Osos Valley Road.

For non-profits, too

"Within a few hours of our call, we had the truck"

What people have said

From the borrowers themselves

"Thanks to Steve and Dianne for coming to Big Brothers Big Sisters' rescue last week. We received a donation of office furniture that needed to be picked up immediately. Within a few hours of our call, we had the truck and were on our way to pick up the donation. Super easy. It's great to know that Bear Valley Realty supports local organizations with their community truck. Thanks again."

"A big shout out and thank you to Steve from Bear Valley Realty. Providing a U-Haul truck for the community to have access to and use. I ended up having the U-Haul for 3 days due to unforeseen circumstances that come with moving. I appreciate all that you do for our community. Keep up the good work."
Paul B.Local Move
"We were able to utilize Bear Valley Realty's community truck for our non-profit group. I highly value a business that gives such a wonderful service to their community. Those are the kind of people I want to do business with. They were generous and flexible, easy to work with, and took extra precautions due to covid."
Heather T.Non-Profit Group
"Can't say enough about the crew at Bear Valley. They have let us use the community truck for years, saving us the hassle and cost of U-Haul. The truck runs exceptionally well, and is equipped with straps, dolly and blankets. Kudos to Steve for making this available to everyone in our community."

How to borrow the truck

01

Call the office

(805) 528-0100. We'll check availability — first come, first served. Same-day requests are usually doable for short hauls; longer moves work best with a few days' notice.

02

Tell us what you're moving

Quick read on the load size, where you're driving, and roughly how long you'll need it. The free truck must stay within San Luis Obispo County. Non-profit pickups go to the top of the list when we have a conflict.

03

Pick up the keys

Stop by 900 Los Osos Valley Road, Suite A. Drivers must be 21 or older. You'll fill out a simple contract and show a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. We'll walk you through the dolly and straps, and answer any questions before you head out.

04

Return it filled

We hand the truck over with a full tank, so we expect to receive it back full. That keeps it gassed up and road-ready for the next neighbor who needs it.

A small note

It stays free because borrowers donate

The truck has no rental fee — and we plan to keep it that way. For non-profit use, that's the end of the conversation. For personal moves, a small contribution toward fuel and upkeep is what keeps the truck on the road for whoever needs it next. There's no minimum and no posted rate; whatever feels right.
